Unit 20 Principle of Structural Design, Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment

Assignment - Principle of Structural Design

Learning Outcome 1: Calculate bending moments and shear forces for simply supported steel and concrete beams

Learning Outcome 2: Determine deflection for simply supported steel beams

Learning Outcome 3: Calculate the axial load carrying capacity of steel and reinforced concrete columns

Learning Outcome 4: explore design methods for steel, reinforced concrete beams and columns

Assignment Brief 1: You have recently a large multi-disciplinary engineering practice as a trainee Civil Engineer. The company are involved in designing buildings, roads and many other structures crucial to the economic and social well-being of the country. As part of your training and professional development your employer has asked you to Research how to carry out calculations relating bending moments and shear evaluate current codes of practice and approved documents relating to steel beam selection.

Task 1- Consider the different types of load which can impact a structure and produce valid of safety for Each. Discuss the statutory requirements to ensure safety in structural designs. Discussion the Hong Kong Safety Registration and code of practice for ensures safety structure design.

Task 2 - The simply supported beam shown in figure 1 has partial UDL's from blockwork with adjacent beams exerting point loads at pint C and E. Calculate:
a) The horizontal and vertical reactions forces at the supports.
b) Plot the shear force and bending moment diagrams showing principle values.
c) Determine the position and magnitude of the design moment MED.

Evaluate how the maximum bending moments determine the steel beam selection using current codes of practice in terms of economics and safety for figure 1 steel designs.

Assignment Brief 2:

You have recently joined a large multi-disciplinary engineering practice Civil Engineer. The company are involved in designing buildings, bridges and many other structures crucial to the economic and social well-being of the country. As part of your training and professional development your employer has asked you to analyses the factors that affect deflection of beams and capacity of columns.

Task 1- The type of support used for a beam has an impact on deflection. Consider the different types of support available and analyses their effect on deflection. (identify the limitations imposed by standards and codes of practice)

Task 2 - A simply supported beam rests on two columns is subject to a downward point force to the beam, Determine deflection in simply supported steel beams with point loads and a uniformly distributed load by using moment-area method

Task 3 - Describe the factors that affect the load carrying of columns such as slenderness ratio, effective length (type of fixity) and material properties. Analyze the properties of different materials which would be used for carrying loads such as steel, timber and reinforced concrete.

Task 4 - Calculations
Determine the axial load carrying capacity of steel columns and reinforced concrete columns and Design how many main reinforcement for the column in the calculated axial load.

A 600 x 600 short braced column supports beams in symmetrical arrangement.
The tributary area for the column is 95 m2.
Dead load, Gk = 5.3 kPa (assuming self-weight of the column included).
Imposed load, Qk = 3.0 kPa.
Number of floors supported = 10.

Task 5 - your employer has been engaged to build a small 3-4 story structure. They have asked you to assess the most suitable material to use and the type of support method for the connections between beams and columns.

Your assessment should include ease and speed of construction, economics, safety and environmental factors.

Assignment Brief 3: A steel beam is carrying the characteristic load and full lateral restraint is provided to the compression flange of the steel beam. Select an appropriate steel section of grade S355. Check the moment capacity, the shear capacity, deflection limit, web buckling resistance and web bearing resistance at the supports. Assume the width of stiff bearing at the support is 160mm and the flange is effectively restrained against both rotation relative to the web and later movement relative to the flange. Take ae=80mm and be=0mm.

Given a column section of 305 x 305 x 118 kg/m UC with an effective length LE = 4.5 m for support the flange, find the compressive resistance Pc of the column. Use grade S355 steel.

Finally, your employer is also in the process of considering a shift to the use of building information modelling (BIM)/computer modelling/drawing. You are asked to provide a brief assessment of how BIM/computer modelling/drawing may benefit the practice in terms of the production and management of information, and collaboration with other professions.

Develop a design solution, including beam design and column design, for a given scenario. Produce structural drawings and specifications in support of a structural design solution.
