Learning Outcomes

2. Formulate creative responses to abstract visual data driven problems and critically evaluate them.
3. Demonstrate effective working methodologies and communication skills in developing both creative visual solutions and demonstrating them to relevant stakeholders.

TASK DESCRIPTION

Scenario

You are to create a purposeful 'dashboard' webpage displaying informational graphics generated by code, using live semi-structured data originating from a public web service API of your choice.

You may utilise software libraries and/or frameworks (e.g. D3.js, CanvasJS, P5.js) Credit will be given for creativity and functionality.

Task 1: Proposal

Research public web service APIs that may generate data which could be used for this purpose.

Research & identify any relevant JavaScript graphics libraries and/or frameworks.

Using brainstorming and ideas generation techniques, develop a proposal for the dashboard. Identify clearly the source(s) of data, the data format(s) and how these will be interpreted graphically on-screen.

Present a brief 2-minute pitch proposal on 16 April 2019.

Task 2: Plan, implement & test

Identify the key elements of your project; prioritise them and plan how the available project time will be managed.

Design the dashboard in detail. Produce the code for the dashboard.
Test the dashboard. (Where possible, test the functionality of the graphical output by replacing the live data with fabricated data.)

Task 3: Reflective evaluation

Produce a brief report (no more than one page) evaluating the project. Comment on the success (or failure) of research, planning, implementation (including software and/or libraries used) and testing. Highlight any lessons learned, indicating changes that would be made if this project were repeated.
