Task - Timber utilisation and preservation

In this assignment you will have opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria.

Assessment criteria -

1. Evaluate the factors that influence timber product utilisation.

2. Explain commonly used timber preservation types and processes.

3. Evaluate how timber products are marketed.

Assessment guidance -

To complete task the learner is required to investigate the factors that impact upon timber utilisation and how timber products can be effectively marketed.

The learner will submit a written report evaluating the characteristics of wood and the economic considerations associated with the use of timber for three (fencing timber (posts and feather edge) Axe handle and Cricket bat/ Assessors choice) timber products specified by the assessor. One of these products are must require some form of preservation treatment and the learner must explain why the preservation (type and process) is appropriate. The report should also detail how these three products are locally marketed and sold.

The report should be written using appropriate technical language and the learner should be encouraged to use illustrations where appropriate to aid their explanations and comparisons.
