SOC3013 - Foundations in Psychology Assignment - Leeds Trinity University, UK

Portfolio Assessment Brief -

The assessment for this module is a 2,000-word portfolio that will be divided into four sections. We advise that you try to keep the sections roughly equal in length, so write approximately 500 words for each one. Please note that this word limit does riot include the reference list at the end of your portfolio. There is no need to include a general introduction or general conclusion section in the portfolio. You should include a full reference list, which should be in APA format at the end of the portfolio.

Portfolio Sections -

Details of the questions you need to address in your portfolio are provided below along with some guidance about what you may decide to include in each section. Please read the questions carefully and make sure that you address the parts in bold in your response.

Section 1: Ethical concerns in psychological research

In this section of your portfolio, discuss the ethical concerns raised by the classic psychological study 'Little Albert' (Watson & Raynor, 1920). You may wish to begin by briefly describing the study including its aims, methodology and main findings before going on to discuss the ethical concerns raised. Please refer to the BPS code of ethics and conduct (2018) in your answer.

Section 2: Selective auditory attention

The world is composed of more sensations than can be handled by our perceptual and cognitive capabilities. To cope with the flood of available information, we must selectively attend to only some information, and somehow 'tune out' the rest. With reference to at least two pieces of psychological research, describe and evaluate one model of selective auditory attention.

Section 3: Eyewitness testimony

Eyewitness testimony refers to an account given by a person who has witnessed an event. Juries tend to pay close attention to eyewitness testimony and generally find it a credible source of information. However, eyewitness testimony is influenced by many factors including leading questions, stress, weapon focus and reconstructive memory. With reference to at least two pieces of psychological research, describe and evaluate one factor that research has shown effects the reliability of eyewitness testimony (e.g. weapon focus or leading questions).

Section 4: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's (1943) hierarchy of needs is one of the best-known theories of motivation. According to Maslow, our actions are motivated to achieve certain needs. There are five different levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs; briefly describe these different levels and explain why Maslow's hierarchy of needs has been so influential.
