Electromagnetic Fields and Waves Assignment -
Assignment Title: Visualisation via Animation of the Magnetic Field due to both a Conduction Current and Displacement Current in an AC Driven Non-ideal Capacitor.
Learning Objectives -
- Knowledge and Understanding - Understand the propagation of electromagnetic waves and apply relevant theories and principles to engineering applications.
- Cognitive - Construct mathematical models of transmission lines with different terminations.
- Practical - Apply software packages to the modelling engineering electromagnetic systems.
- Key Skills - Be exposed to electromagnetic engineering problems in the areas of Electromagnetic Interference, Signal Integrity & Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).
Assignment Brief -
Introduction - This assignment involves Computer Simulation and Visualisation with MATLAB of the Magnetic Field due to both a Conduction Current and Displacement Current, in an AC Driven Non-ideal Capacitor. The Capacitor consists of circular parallel plates with an imperfect dielectric between the plates. The detailed instructions on how to perform the simulation are given in the accompanying MATLAB-Based Electromagnetics manual. Carry out the instructions in the manual carefully (Programs ME6_11.m and ME6_13.m) with assistance from the tutor.
Required Sections of the Laboratory Report
Backgound and the Intention of the MATLAB Based Electromagnetic Simulation
(a) Discuss the background and intention of the MATLAB Based Electromagnetic Simulation. Derive the relevant electromagnetic equations that are solved by the Electromagnetic Simulation.
The Software
(b) Include a software listing of the MATLAB programs with any functions called, together with a discussion of how the code works.
The Testing of Code and Program Output
(c) Include a testing table with entries for Expected Result and Actual Result. Produce an analytic solution to give the Expected Result. Include a screenshot of the Program output and explain the Program results.
Application of Fundamental Principles to Electrical & Electronic Engineering
(d) Discuss radio wave propagation and communications in the ionosphere.
A report must be produced in MS Word covering all the above sections of the Magnetic Field due to both a Conduction Current and Displacement Current, in an AC Driven Non-ideal Capacitor Assignment. All figures, diagrams and tables should have captions and be numbered. The Harvard System should be used for referencing.
