Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit a learner will:
LO1 Understand the difference between personnel management and human resource management
LO2 Understand how to recruit employees
LO3 Understand how to reward employees in order to motivate and retain them
LO4 Know the mechanisms for the cessation of employment.
Task 1 – Understand the difference between personnel management and human resource management (LO1)
1a) Identify which approach, Personnel Management or Human Resource Management, your chosen organisation adopts. Discuss the difference/s between the two approaches and discuss how HRM contributes to overall business objectives within an organisation.
1b) Investigate how the HRM related tasks / responsibilities of line managers in your chosen organisation have developed over recent years, and briefly discuss the extent of these changes.
1c) Select 2 areas of HRM related legislation / legal regulations, and analyse the impact they have on the HRM processes of your chosen organization.
Task 2 – Understand how to recruit employees (LO2)
2a) Outline the stages involved the HR planning processes at your chosen organisation and explain why it is important for your chosen organisation to conduct HR planning.
If your chosen org does not carry out formal HR planning then you should explain how and why they SHOULD undertake HR planning.
2b) Compare and contrast the recruitment AND selection processes of two (2) organisations. Evaluate the effectiveness of some of the techniques used in the two different organisations. (One organisation should be your chosen organisation used in your earlier answers plus another organisation of your choice)
Task 3 – Understand how to reward employees in order to motivate and retain them (LO3)
3a) What is ‘job evaluation’? Explain how and why is it used within your chosen organisation? (You should include details of all of the factors which the organisation uses when determining pay rates.)
If ‘job evaluation’ does not take place in your chosen organisation you should describe how job evaluation SHOULD be executed in your chosen organisation
3b) Provide examples of two different methods that the chosen organisation use to monitor the performance of employees. Suggest one improvement that could be made by the chosen organisation in its management of employee performance.
3c) Evaluate the effectiveness of the reward system/s in place at your chosen organisation and comment on the link between the reward system/s in place and Maslows ‘hierarchy of needs’ motivation theory.
Task 4 – Know the mechanisms for the cessation of employment (LO4)
4a) Compare and contrast the exit procedures used by your chosen organisation with one other organisation of your choice.
4b) List the reasons that employment could cease with your chosen organisation. Give details of two (2) elements of legislation / regulation that have had an impact on the employment cessation arrangements of your chosen organisation.
