Higher Nationals Assignment Brief - BTEC (RQF)
Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering problem
Learning Outcome 1: Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering problem, with reference to national and international engineering regulatory regimes and ethical frameworks.
Learning Outcome 2: Conduct planned project activities to generate outcomes which provide a solution to the identified engineering problem
Learning Outcome 3: Produce a project report analysing the outcomes of each of the project processes and stages
Learning Outcome 4: Present the project report drawing conclusions on the outcomes of the project
Scenario
Safety
"There is no such thing as an accident, only a failure to recognise the hand of fate" (Napoleon Bonaparte).
• Safety in engineering is integral to the profession and involves building products/systems (e.g. CNCs, inject moulding machines, pneumatic power systems, communication networks, electric systems etc.) that behave as expected, good touse and provide acceptable levels of safety when the components fail. Safety as a design feature involves studying, identifying, analysing, evaluating, and controlling hazards in human-machine systems (artifacts, equipment, or facilities) that contain a potential to cause injury to people or damage to property.
• Safety could be broadly categorised as passive and active, with active systems focusing on ‘functional safety' which require further risk assessments. Safety reviews are increasingly becoming mandatory in engineering risk management strategies.
• While several small to medium failures (i.e. the person losing a finger while operating or repairing a machine in the local engineering company or an accident that could occur at a railway crossing if the barriers fail) attract less publicity, the major industrial failures such as Chernobyl and Space Shuttle Challenger constantly remind us of the various facets of the safety issues (i.e. from flawed design errors to lack of ethical safety culture / human error) and as we know now, the consequences of some of these failures have serious repercussions spanning generations.
• These incidents serve as ‘the lessons to learn' in eliminating injuries and work towards a drastic reduction of serious accidents by promoting ‘safety as a value' through legislation (e.g. HASAW Act, OSH Act, OHS Act, EU-OSH, JISHA:OSH, LEGOSH),safety standards (e.g. ISO 14122, ISO 14118, ISO 14119, IEC 61508), policies, innovation, workplace practices and culture, and training. Safety continues to improve around the world and some notable recent changes in the sector include the new Health and Safety at Work Act in New Zealand, stricter sentencing guidelines in the UK and technological explosion in producing worker safety devices based on GPS and cellular technology.
You will need to select a project based on the theme described above. based on your selected project, you are required to carry out the following tasks:
Task 1
Select a suitable engineering-based project by using appropriate project selection method and develop the engineering project plan in order give proper engineering solution to the problem.
Note: You have to Clearly Illustrate the standards and ethics on the decision-making process in developing the project plan.
Task 2
a. Develop project implementation strategies to undertake project while maintaining health, safety and professional standards in engineering.
b. Prepare a progress monitoring and recording program against each stage of project plan to critically evaluate project milestones. Explore alternative methods by using appropriate analysis and evaluation techniques to critically evaluate and improve the project outcome and to achieve future improvements.
Task 3
Present the project outcome, gained values, challengers and lesson learns of each project phases as above described by a well-organized and comprehensible report (prepared as per the given guideline) and present the summery of the project by using appropriate media to an audience.
