Objectives - By the end of this week, you should be able to:

Identify consonant and vowel sounds which are likely to be problematic for L2 learners.

Identify features of connected speech in naturally occurring spoken language.

Analyse a transcript of speech in terms of phonological features.

Understand some of the issues surrounding pronunciation in English and the implications for both the teacher and learner.

Task 1 -

Identify which of the initial consonant sounds are voiced and voiceless in the following words:

Task 2 -

Using the IPA chart to help you, describe the following consonants using the terminology introduced in the lecture (voicing, place and manner of articulation).

As useful transcription practice, transcribe this excerpt from the poem "Parents' Evening" by A. Ahlberg. Include any aspects of connected speech.

Parents' Evening

We're waiting in the corridor,
