Organisational Behaviour Assignment -

Learning Outcomes - By the end of this unit a student will be able to:

1. Analyse the influence of culture, politics and power on the behaviour of others in an organisational context.

2. Evaluate how to motivate individuals and teams to achieve a goal.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of how to cooperate effectively with others.

4. Apply concepts and philosophies of organisational behaviour to a given business situation.

ASSESSMENT TASKS -

Learners are encouraged to be familiar with the assessment criteria and contextualised grade descriptors before completing these Learning Outcomes.

Task 1 - Individual Report

You are applying for the role of HR Manager within your chosen organisation and as part of the selection process you are required to produce a written report analysing the influence of culture, politics and power on the behaviour of others in an organisational context. While writing report, please consider -

  • Analyse how an organisation's culture, politics and power influence individual an team behaviour and performance.
  • Critically analyse how the culture, politics and power of an organisation can influence individual and team behaviour and performance.
  • Critically evaluate the relationship between culture, politics, power and motivation that enables teams and organisations to succeed providing justified recommendations.

Task 2 - Individual Report

You are now appointed as an HR manager for your chosen company. Your first undertaking is the following:

Prepare a report evaluating how to motivate individuals and teams to achieve a goal. While writing your report, please consider -

  • Evaluate how content and process theories of motivation and motivational techniques enable effective achievement of goals in an organisational context.
  • Critically evaluate how to influence the behaviour of others through the effective application of behavioural motivational theories, concepts and models.
  • Critically evaluate the relationship between culture, politics, power and motivation that enables teams and organisations to succeed providing justified recommendations.

Task 3 - Individual Report

As an HR manager, your second undertaking is the following:

Prepare a report demonstrating an understanding of how to cooperate effectively with others. While writing your report, please consider -

  • Explain what makes an effective team as oppose to an ineffective team.
  • Analyse relevant team and group development theories to support the development of dynamic cooperation.
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the relevance of team development theories in context of organisational behaviour concepts and philosophies that influence behaviour in the work place.

Task 4 - Group Work - Presentation

Business situation: Magazine publishing company has recently downsized and consolidated its businesses. Now that the layoff is complete, top management is trying to devise a program to motivate the remaining editorial and production employees, who range from rank-and-file employees who operate printing presses to upper-level employees such as magazine editors.

As a result of the downsizing, the workloads of most employees have been increased by about 30 percent. In addition, resources are tight. A very limited amount of money is available for things such as pay raises, bonuses, and benefits. Nevertheless, top management thinks the company has real potential and that its fortunes could turn around if employees could be motivated to perform at a high level, be innovative, and work together to regain the company's competitive advantage.

Your group is acting as the consulting team, and you are required to prepare a presentation and answer the following questions:

1. What specific steps will you take to develop a motivation program based on the knowledge you have gained from this unit?

2. What key features will your motivation program include?

While doing above, please consider -

  • Apply concepts and philosophies of organisational behaviour within an organisational context and a given business situation.
  • Explore and evaluate how concepts and philosophies of OB inform and influence behaviour in both a positive and negative way.
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the relevance of team development theories in context of organisational behaviour concepts and philosophies that influence behaviour in the work place.

Task 4 - Individual work
