ME5569 Waste to Energy: Integrated gasification fuel cell

Post New Homework

ME5569 - Waste to Energy: Integrated gasification fuel cell system for The Hillingdon Hospital - Brunel University London

OBJECTIVE 1: To demonstrate the ability to carry out a technical, environmental and economic assessment of potential integration of low carbon/renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency process for The Hillingdon Hospital buildings.

OBJECTIVE 2: To demonstrate the ability to communicate the rationale behind the assessment and its findings/conclusions in the form of a formal client report.

You are asked to produce a brief technical report that includes:

Part 1. An assessment of the technical feasibility of the process, the production of energy by choosing the right type of gasifier and how the energy could be used by using Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell system.

Part 2. The economic viability of such a scheme including any support mechanisms which may be available from the Government

Part 3. An environmental assessment discussing how much CO2 emissions can be reduced together with any other relevant environmental issues.

LO 1. Develop an understanding of key technological and economic factors that determine the design and use of renewable waste-to-energy processes.

LO 2. Perform an in-depth design and analysis of the integrated gasification fuel cell energy generation solution to cope with power & heat demands of THH buildings.

LO 3. Demonstrate ability to analyse both facts provided and research any further necessary information to inform your decisions.

LO 4. Develop skills in the production of a concise client report.

ASSESSMENT BRIEF:

To this end, you are asked to produce a brief technical report that includes:

Explain what types of gasifiers available and which type will best fit this application with respect to the feedstock characteristics. What types of fuel cells are available and would the fuel cell provide an acceptable integration with the selected gasifier.

Suggest a (i) possible design concept for this system, (ii) any post processing of gasification product required for efficient hydrogen production, (iii) an appropriate fuel cell for power generation and (iv) method for using the syngas for heating. Discuss the economic viability of the scheme including any support mechanisms which may be available from Government. What are the costs you need to take into account for this kind of projects?

You are advising THH as a consultant to the company. Your answer should be in the form of a report to THH and include an executive summary. It should be 3,000 words and include appropriate references and bibliography.
