YOUR AIMS
On completion of this lesson you should be able to:
- identify the key aspects of the design process
- locate the materials selection stages in the design process
- present an overview of manufacturing processes for all classes of materials
- select manufacturing processes for a range of components.
1. What stages of product development involve materials selection?
List the factors which involve the choice of material, or materials, for a particular product.
2. Select processing routes for the following components.
(a) Automotive wheels from the following alloy: magnesium with 6% aluminium and 0.13% manganese.
(b) Bronze gear wheels.
Identify the advantages of using the chosen processes.
Indicate the likely characteristics of each material which make it suitable for shaping with the method chosen. Indicate any advantages of each method.
What defects may occur in the chosen manufacturing route?
