Module Learning Outcomes - There are four learning outcomes for the module and by the time you have completed it, it is envisaged that you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of complex systems and the key concepts in systems thinking and complexity and their application within the health and care sectors.

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding and analysis of the challenges of leading change and innovation across complex systems within health and care.

3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the factors which contribute to organisational culture on and within health and care organisations.

4. Reflect critically on the key concepts of power, culture and influence and their application and impact across systems and at the different levels of organisations.

Assessment Tasks -

Task 1: 1000- word annotated bibliography

Each student is required to submit a 1000- word annotated bibliography identifying a minimum of five and maximum of ten references which provides evidence of Innovation across a Health System.

An ' Annotated Bibliography' is a list of citations followed by a descriptive and evaluative paragraph from a range of sources (academic research papers, high quality journals articles, policy documents, text books). The purpose of the annotation is for the student to consider the relevance, accuracy and quality of the citation in relation to the question posed.

Task 2: 10- minute group presentation

Groups of students are required to prepare and deliver a 10-minute presentation on an innovative project which has been implemented and has been proven to improve patient care and reduce potential healthcare costs, in one specific area.

The purpose of the presentation is to allow students to practice communicating complex information to a group of "managers" in a concise and engaging way. The grade is pass or fail, graded on the presentation made by individuals. This is not scored as it is a group piece of work.

Remember this is a management task, not a clinical task and so your presentation should focus of the topic from a systems, culture and/or change management perspective.

Task 3: 2500- word individual essay

You are a manager working in a health system that is responsible for delivering care to patients. You have been asked by the Health Board to identify a proven innovation which is being used to im prove patient care and reduce costs in one specific discipline.

You are required to submit a management report to the Health Board identifying how you would manage the implementation of this innovation in the health system. Within this report you should consider:

i. Evidence to demonstrate why you have chosen this innovation. (What is the innovation?)

ii. Critical analysis of the evidence base to evaluate the potential impact of this innovation, from a systems perspective. (Why is this innovation proven?)

iii. Relevant leadership and management theory to critically analyse what strategies you would use to guide the implementation of this innovation. Consider this from systems, power, culture and change management perspectives. (Implementation)

iv. Using theory to support from system leadership, identify how success could be identified for the innovation. (How will you know it's been successful?)
