Brief Course Description:

The course covers traditional material as well as recent advances in information storage and retrieval, the study of the processing, indexing, querying, organization, and classification of textual documents, including hypertext documents available on the WWW.

Course Objectives:

The objective of the course is to:

• Introduce the students to underlining principles of information storage and retrieval systems.

• Prepare the students to design, develop and use information retrieval and search systems.

• Introduce the students to practices, issues and theoretical foundations of organizing and analyzing information and information content for the purpose of providing intellectual access to textual and non-textual information resources.

• Introduce the students to the major types of information retrieval systems, search engine, the different theoretical foundations underlying these systems, and the methods and measures that can be used to evaluate them.

Expected Learning Outcome:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to

• Explain basic information storage and retrieval concepts.

• Describe what issues are specific to efficient information retrieval.

• Give applications of alternative search strategies and explain why the particular search strategy is appropriate for the application.

• Design and implement a small to medium size information storage and retrieval system.
