Introduction and background notes (vocational context) -
It is normal practice in Health and Social Care (HSC) to provide quality information to users of services, because they are generally vulnerable. Any misinformation may cause serious irremediable effect on users. The unit aims to prepare students to convey accurate information on everyday health related issues and also to equip them to combat against misinformation and lessen the taboo that exists in many communities.
Aims of the Unit: This unit will help students gain relevant skills and knowledge in developing their understanding on how current concerns influence the service policy and procedures of HSC in the UK. Practically, student will learn the techniques of identifying current concerns on health care issues when it comes out to public domain through various media. Students will gain knowledge on how the media engineers issues to attract the attention of policy makers from public domain. For example, current tendency of self-harming within a fourth of 14 years age girls in UK (Guardian Newspaper, 29th August, 2018). It has attracted a significant amount of public attention. Once public attention reach its height the policy makers employ their thoughts for policy to handle the crisis and develop the services.
Students will research news media to bring current issues to the classroom for healthy debate which increase the quality of services in HSC. Through classroom debate students will increase their knowledge on how the issues of concern comes to public domain. There is also a scope of learning on how public concern attracts attention of policy makers to develop services in HSC. Current health related issues are not limited to diseases, they could be issues like government austerity measure on social care (funding cut on various care services), winter fuel issue and its effect on poor pensioners, Dr Bawa Garba case outcomes and its impact on service users, or it could be Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Some current examples of current issues are: Ebola; Zika Virus; Baby P; SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome); avian influenza; H1N1(Hemagglutinin Type1 and Neuraminidase Type 1 - Influenza Virus); Foot and Mouth disease; Haut de la Garenne Children's Home; Winterbourne View Care Home; Jimmy Savile revelations.

Produce a brochure that includes the following information using the case study and your own research.
Q1. Explain how information relating to health and social care reaches the public domain. In your explanation you should use an example of a contemporary health related issue to support the explanation of how a health and social care issue reaches the public domain.
Q2. Analyse different techniques for disseminating information relating to health and social care. In your analysis use the example used above to support the different techniques for disseminating information relating to health and social care.
Q3. Evaluate how the different ways in which information relating to health and social care is presented can influence the attitudes, thoughts and behaviour of people. In your evaluation discuss how differences in the format, style and content of information relating to health and social care.

Using the case scenario and information found in your own research, you determined that occasionally media presentations may create panic within the service users. You as a deputy manager of your project that is in charge of female development activities is developing a staff memo covering the issue, i.e., what is it, who are the victims and what are the long and short term impacts of the issue within the community.
