Purpose of this assessment
Practitioners who work in health and social care require an understanding of the influences on the health of the individuals with whom they work. This assignment will assess the students’ knowledge and understanding of pertinent issues in health promotion. Students are expected to investigate a range of influences on health and also reasons for the varied success of health promotion campaigns and strategies at a regional and national level. Students are expected to examine theories of health behaviour linked with government strategies to improve the health of individuals in society. Finally, students are expected to develop a plan for a health promotion campaign for a specific group in society.
Scenario
The National Health Service (NHS) understands that education and prevention are fundamental to improve health in the UK. You are a Health practitioner that has been tasked with the responsibility of overseeing a health promotion campaign for the NHS. The Director wants you to conduct a thorough analysis of different aspects of health promotion and create a report analysing such elements. She also wants you to create a health promotion plan for the national audience, on a topic you are passionate about, and present it to the Board of Directors.
Your performance will be reviewed on the basis of how effectively you are able to explore health promotion concepts and apply the same concepts to the plan. The report you are expected to create will be individual, however the Director has given you the opportunity to create the health promotion plan with an assigned team. The presentation to the Board of Directors needs to be a team presentation with a choice of a Poster or PowerPoint presentation.
Task 1 – Individual Report
The first part of your report involves an analysis of the socio-economic influences on health. You are expected to create a first section of the report where you analyse the following:
1. Explanation of the effects (minimum of 3 effects) of socio-economic influences on health
2. Identification of government sources (minimum of 3 governmental reports) and an assessment of the relevance of the same sources in reporting inequalities in health
3. Based on the previous analysis, discuss potential reasons for barriers in accessing healthcare.
Task 2 – Individual Report
The second part of the individual report must assess different approaches to health by analysing different models of health promotion. Therefore your report should include:
1. Define and explain at least 2 models of health promotion
2. Choose two government health strategies for health education at the regional level and analyse the link between the government strategies and the models analysed in the above point.
3. Explain the role of health professionals in health promotion and discuss the importance of establishing routines for healthy living.
Task 3 – Individual Report
The last section of your report must explore factors that influence health promotion. A person’s behaviour is often the cause of many modern diseases. Therefore, your focus should be in how to modify such behaviour:
1. Define the concept of health belief and examine 3 health beliefs that are present in the UK society.
2. Critically assess the 3 health beliefs based on two health behaviour models of your choice.
3. Discuss how different political positions can reflect on different health promotion strategies and explain the relevance of providing relevant health-information to the public through schools, workplace and neighbourhoods.
Task 4 – Group Project
As a team you need to plan a health promotion campaign designed to educate a specific sector of the population in the UK. This campaign needs to be a local campaign and will need to be presented to the Board of Directors in either a poster or PowerPoint format. The plan needs to include:
1. The purpose of the campaign
2. The creation of a needs assessment strategy
3. The creation of a health promotion plan with specific objectives (a minimum of 2 SMART objectives)
4. Measurement and evaluation processes for the campaign
Your plan must convince the Board of Directors that the campaign will support your health promotion strategies and will lead to change of pre-existing beliefs.
