Objectives - By the end of the week you should be able to:
Identify word classes, phrases and grammatical relations in text.
Apply some aspects of the above to the analysis of a text.
Task 1 -
Identify the word class of the words in bold in the following sentence. There are two nouns and two verbs so you should identify the sub-categories for these words.
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, 'and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversation?'

Task 3 - Verb phrases
Identify the verb phrases in the following sentences, from The Economist.
1. Higher temperatures.
2. Global warming.
3. In theory extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
4. In the most comprehensive exploration of these issues so far, the International Food Policy Research Institute.
5. In parts of the developing world some crop yields in 2050.
Task 4 - Noun phrases
The following sentences are taken from an interview with an inventor. Identify the noun phrases. Which are more complex? Why might this be?
1. British inventors really need more help and support from the law.
2. An inventor's life is full of promise and pitfalls.
3. One of my favourite bits of my own work is the Transporter scooter pack.
4. Saw lots of children leaving their scooters outside school.
5. As a result I integrated a scooter into an actual backpack.

Task 6 - Direct object or subject complement?
Are the underlined phrases in the following sentences direct objects or subject complements?
(a) Mrs Smith designed this house

(c) Treason is a capital crime

(e) I had no real chance of success
(f) Mr Jones died a hero
Task 7 -
Identify the grammatical relations (GRs) in the following sentences: (from Stories of Sherlock Holmes, adapted by Trevor Millican, Oxford University Press)
Reminder: Subject, Verb, Direct Object, Indirect Object, Subject complement, Object complement, Oblique
Where two clauses are joined in a co-ordinate sentence you will also need the term conjunction to link them.
1. Arthur Conan Doyle studied medicine but chose to be a writer.
2. He wrote his first Sherlock Holmes story in 1887 and it was a huge success.
3. By 1893, the writer had decided to move on from Holmes, so in his next story, Holmes died.
4. When it was published, some people in London wore black clothes.
5. They wanted more Holmes stories, so Doyle had to bring his detective back to life.
