Task:

Investigate a topic of your choice by gathering, processing and analysing data from a given source and write a 1000 report to communicate your work and findings.

• This Assessment is worth 30% of the overall mark for this module.
• Your work should be 1000 words in length(+/-10%).
• The aim of this assessment is to enable you to demonstrate your ability to investigate an issue using statistical techniques, analysis and interpretation.
• Your work should be submitted before the above deadline through the Turnitin link on the VLE.
• Work submitted after this date will receive a reduced mark in line with college policy.

Learning Outcomes - The learning outcomes being assessed in this research project are:
• Understand the principles of collection, summary and organisation of data.
• Present and interpret collected data.
• Calculate, interpret and use summary measures.

Any ideas or theories based on the work of other writers must be fully acknowledged and correctly referenced both within the text and the bibliography/reference list.

To complete your Research Project you will need to complete all of the following tasks:

1. Decide upon a topic you wish to research. This may be related to business, law, science or the social sciences (i.e. the changes in unemployment statistics over time, drug use by different age groups, crimes in different regions of the country ...etc

2. Collect secondary data from the UK's Office of National Statistics website (www.ons.gov.uk)which relates to your topic of interest. The data you select is up to you, but you must collect enough data to allow you to complete the tasks below properly.
• Data means tables of facts and numbers. You must not copy graphs from the ONS website.

3. Use a range of appropriate graphical techniques to display and process this data (i.e. bar charts, scatter diagrams, histograms, pie charts, cumulative frequency curves etc.).
• Your report should contain at least four graphs of at least two different types.
• You MUST draw the graphs yourself using graph paper and pens.

4. Calculate at least one measure of average and one measure of spread which relate to your collected data.

5. Write a detailed commentary describing your analysis;
• Describe the data, your graphs and the results of your calculations.
• Analyse your data and processing commenting on the patterns, trends and significant values that you observe
• Interpret your data, graphs and calculations to give a wider context to your commentary.

6. Outline and discuss any issues you think might relate to the original collection of the data you have used in your report. Your discussion might include the following points;
• An outline of how the data were (or might have been) collected.
• A discussion of some of the problems that might have been experienced by the researchers in collecting this data.
• Your ideas about how to improve on this data collection technique and why you think your method would be better.

Report layout

1. Introduction

• Describe what your topic area is
o Why have you decided to study this area?
o What do you hope to learn?

2. Data tables

• This section can be used to share the data that you are using.
• It should consist of a table (or a series of tables) with the data that you are using to help answer the question;
o The tables might be copied directly from the ONS website
o if the original data were not presented in a table you might have to create one

3. Diagrams and Calculations

• This section could contain graphs and diagrams
o Each graph or diagram might be accompanied by a brief description (e.g. "The graph above shows how prices for mobile phone contracts have changed over the past 15 years")
• You could include all of the calculations you have chosen to conduct in this section
o Be sure to include all workings with your calculations and results.

4. Commentary, Analysis and Interpretation

• Use this section to discuss all points of interest relating to your data, graphs and calculations.
• It should also be used to comment in detail on the diagrams and calculations contained in section 3
o What do your graphs show?
o What patterns can be seen in the diagrams?
o What information do the results of your calculations provide?

5. Data collection process and issues

• How were the data gathered by the original researcher's?
o This requires you to investigate how the data were actually gathered or to imagine how you might have collected the data if you had been given the task
o You may need to speculate in some places
• What issues or problems did they experience or could they have experienced?

6. Conclusion

• Summarize briefly the main points from section 4.
• Provide an answer to your report question.
o The answer may be clear or ambiguous. Complete or only partial.
o Is further research required?
• Are any other questions raised by your work?
• What research could be done to follow on from your work?
