Engineering Maths (21002K) (AHMA411) - Trigonometric and Vector Techniques Assignment

Assessment brief -

Purpose - Be able to assess trainee's skills on analytical and computational methods to analyse and solve problems within an engineering context.

Scenario - As a newly-hired technician in an engineering company, your manager has asked you to solve engineering problems that are related and applicable to your work. The problems comprise sinusoidal and vector functions applying analytical and graphical techniques.

Task - As a technician, you are asked to analyse the behaviour of an electrical system. In a particular electric circuit, three components are connected in a series. After thorough scrutiny of the voltages produced by the components, the following equations are obtained:

v1 = 90 sin 80πt volts

v2 = 90 sin (80πt + π/4) volts, and

v3 = 120 sin (80πt - 2π/3) volts

where v1, v2 and v3 are the voltages across first, second and third components, respectively. You are specifically asked to do the following:

1. i. Find the Phase angle.

ii. Find the time when the voltage is a maximum.

2. Determine the v2 + v3.

3. Draw the sinusoidal curves for v1, v2 and v3.
