Assessment title Principles of Health and Social Care Practice

Purpose of this assessment - This unit aims to develop students' ability to critically analyse an area of professional practice in terms of knowledge and research. Furthermore to develop an understanding of values, theories and policies underpinning health and social care practice, and the mechanism that exist to promote good practice.

TASK 1: BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND HOW PRINCIPLES OF SUPPORT ARE IMPLEMENTED IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

Scenario - Watch the following video: Profound intellectual and multiple disabilities | NHS

You should also draw on relevant Powerpoint slides for LO 1 - these are clearly marked on the VLE.

Victoria (in the video clip) has Profound and Multiple Sensory Difficulties requiring 24 hour support. At the same time she is able to enjoy activities and a quality of life as a result as a result of the tailored support that she receives. Her mother gives examples of how Principles of Support and Person-Centred Care have enabled this and also mentions Ethical Dilemmas that she experienced as a Carer.

1.1 Drawing on the case study and/or your own experience and learning, explain how principles of support are applied to enable and promote the well-being of clients.

1.2 Outline current legislative procedures and/or policies for Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults.

1.3 Analyse the benefit of following a person-centred approach with service users. Once more you can draw on the case study and/or your own experienced and research.

1.4 Explain ethical dilemmas and conflict that may arise when providing care, support and protection to Clients such as Victoria. You can draw from your own work experience in relation to this question.

Scenario - You are working in a Residential Care Home and have been asked to assist in writing an induction pack for new members of staff on the subject of the importance of following policies and procedures.

TASK 2: BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF POLICY, LEGISLATION, REGULATION, CODES OF PRACTICE AND STANDARDS ON ORGANISATION POLICY AND PRACTICE

You are working in a Residential Care Home as a Team Leader and have been asked to assist in writing an induction pack for new members of staff on the subject of the importance of following policies and procedures in a workplace. To enable you to complete this task you will need to read one (or more) of the three Codes of Practice available on the Virtual Learning Environment.

TASK 3: BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE THEORIES THAT UNDERPIN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE PRACTICE

Scenario: You are working as an 'elearning' trainer in Health and Social Care for your organisation and have asked to design a series of Powerpoint slides covering Key theories in Health and Social Care.

(You will receive a demonstration of how to structure your slides. Note that this not a verbal presentation, the task is concerned with designing learning resources).

3.1 Explain two or more theories that underpin work in Health and Social Care.

3.2 Analyse how social processes such as Poverty, Housing and Social Exclusion impact on service users in Health and Social Care.

TASK 4: BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE ORGANISATIONAL POLICY

Scenario - You are preparing for an appraisal at your workplace and have been asked to prepare a briefing paper based on your own job role and responsibilities. This needs to address all three of these questions.

4.1 Explain own role, responsibilities, accountabilities and duties in the context of working with those within and outside the health and social care workplace.

4.2 Evaluate own contribution to the development and implementation of health and social care organisational policy.

4.3 Make recommendations to develop own contributions to meeting good practice requirements.

Note - You must produce one type-written piece of work covering all the assessment criterion in LO1-LO4 as one document.
