Assignment - Destination Report

The following are a range of tourism destinations from both the developed and developing world. Select ONE from the list:

Compile a 2000 word report on how your chosen region was planned for tourism and what development strategies it has followed over time. This is a desktop exercise where you will consult your chosen destination's policies and tourism plans and strategies as well as consult the wider academic scholarly literature on wider thinking around tourism planning and development. In so cases you may find scholarly journal articles that use your chosen destination as the case study location for their research.

You are required to write up your report in 'report format', including an executive summary, and inserting tables, figures and images where appropriate. All sources cited should be referenced according to Harvard format. You can also place some of your content within appendices but you must show where that content relates to in your destination report. As noted previously, while your report is focused on a particular region, your discussion must be framed within a wider academic understanding of both tourism planning and tourism development. So with regard to planning, think about the different planning traditions and which ones you see being implemented over time. In terms of tourism development, you need to provide a chronology of tourism growth over time, key markets and how these may have changed over time, product development, in other words what types of tourism has been developed over time (what niches are being catered for?); much of this can be addressed by examining if your chosen region aligns with the different stages of Butler's curve over its history and which stage it is currently at. Under your discussion of tourism development you also need to give some thought to what challenges your region is currently facing and may face in the future that may impact on its ongoing development.
