The aim of the essay is to describe and discuss historical and contemporary migration trends in a country or sub-region on the American continents (including for example countries such as USA, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia or sub-regions such as the Caribbean, Central America, etc). You may also choose to discuss migration between two specific South or North American countries.

Consider the following when writing your essay:

• Historical background to the current trends must be included
• Political context and analysis must be included
• You may focus on trends in migration to, from and/or within the region
• You may decide to focus on a sub-region/country within the region that you have chosen, but you must include analysis of international migration.
• If you delimit your case study to a country, please state clearly in the introduction how and why you have delimited yourself

You must engage with migration theories discussed in the literature for this course.

The essay may not be longer than 1200 words (including references). Correct academic reference technique must be used (either Oxford or Harvard). No references or incorrect reference technique is an automatic fail. Good academic style of writing must also be used.
