DATA WAREHOUSING

Brief course description:

This course introduces students to data warehousing concepts. It also provides an understanding of business problems that data warehouse solutions are designed to address. The course also introduces the key architectural components of a data warehouse, the strategies and tools for designing, building and deploying successful data warehouse solutions.

Course objectives:

• To introduce students to data warehousing concepts

• To introduce students to the importance of making meaningful use of large volumes of data for decision making.

•  To introduce students to the methods and technologies for successful development of data warehouses

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

o Describe the main concepts of data warehousing.

o Describe the decision support purpose and goal of a data warehouse.

o Explain the implementation and organizational issues associated with a data warehouse.

o Describe the various technologies required to implement a data warehouse.

o Describe the role of metadata in a data warehouse design and the strategies to define and maintain metadata.

o Explain the central concepts of dimensional data models.

o Describe the transformation of different models (e.g. transforming a business model into a dimensional model).
