ER1630 - Engineering Applications - University of Central Lancashire
Assignment: Data Acquisition and Analysis
Learning outcomes
The assignment should produce sufficient evidence for partial fulfilment of the following module learning outcomes:
LO1. Develop a program utilizing object oriented programming
LO2. Apply computer-based techniques to engineering problems
LO3. Write effective formal written reports
Assignment
You have been provided two datasets comprising metrological data recorded through 1 month and the power output from a large wind turbine recorded at the same time. You are to make suitable corrections to any errors that may be evident and produce a formal report describing the performance of a wind turbine and the available wind resource. Your report will consist of a description and analysis of the data in the files 'meteorological data' and 'turbine data' and a number of figures.
These data have been acquired from a wind turbine with a diameter of 85m, forming part of a large wind farm. Your report should include the following:
Part a. A labelled plot showing the wind speed data against date / time [5] Comment on it's variability
Part b. A histogram of the wind speeds [5] with comments on the mean, mode, and skewness
Part c. A labelled plot showing power against wind speed [5] and a description of how the turbine performance varies, with particular reference to the maximum power generated and power output at low wind speeds
Part d. Obtain a line of best fit of the graph obtained in (C) (try using a 4th order polynomial) and add it to the plot. Using you line fitting method, produce a table of estimates of power output for wind speeds 4-20 m/s.
Part e. Using a calculation for air density, plot a graph showing how the ratio between the power generated by the turbine and the available power in the wind, Cp, changes with respect to wind speed [5]. Add a line approximating best fit.
Part f. Comment on the efficiency of the turbine as calculated from the coefficient of performance: do the data look right?
To assist you with creating good plots, Full marks are awarded where;
• Axis titles are present and sized well enough to read clearly.
• Data is appropriately represented showing clear relationships where they exist and none where they do not (plotting using a line may not always the best method)
• The plot is included as a good quality image, rather than just a screenshot
Your report should also contain a brief description of wind turbine technology (you will need to do some reading around the subject and use references correctly).
Note that all the figures and graphs should appear in the main part of the report and each should be correctly referenced within the text of your report. Marks will be lost for plots that do not have readable axis labels and titles; assume you are preparing a formal report to be read by a third party. Save your graphs in a suitable format (such as PNG or JPG) and use the 'insert' command to copy the image into your Word document.
