CIVIL ENGINEERING GROUP DESIGN PROJECT

Learning outcome 1: Conduct detailed design on a specific aspect of the project, including all aspects of design in accordance to construction industry standard, detailed calculations and drawings.

Learning outcome 2: Defend the design as part of a team to professional engineers drawn from industry and academia, using design drawings as the primary means of communication but other props and models too.

Learning outcome 3: Critically analyse engineering management principles, to include commercial aspects such as costings, scheduling and regulatory issues.

Learning outcome 4: Demonstrate awareness of managing assets to optimise cost, risk, security and performance over the whole asset life cycle.

Objectives:

1. To provide students with the opportunity to pursue a group civil engineering design project under academic supervision

2. To provide students with an experience of real design work of the type they may be expected to undertake in a civil engineering consultancy

3. To expose students to matters of health and safety, security, sustainability and costing as related to a particular design

Task:

Detailed design calculations:

The design calculations must be in accordance with Eurocodes, presented in standard format showing clearly load evaluations, support conditions assumed and complete design checks. A reflective summary on the detailed design to cover any issues/assumptions affecting the design, how design can be improved through further changes and how the element design work undertaken can be extended to cover other elements of the scheme must be included by each team member.

Design calculations can be validated by modelling for extra marks.

Drawings:
? Drawings (A4/A3 size) showing general arrangement, sections, elevations clearly showing the form of the design.
? Drawings to clearly show details of structural/environmental/geotechnical or other elements designed including connection details.

Each individual team member must carry out detailed cost analysis of selected parts to contribute to the overall cost analysis.

Construction scheduling, methodology and method statements for safe construction procedure for the building. Each team member must develop a detailed construction methodology and method statements for a selected phase of the project.

The students will be required to submit the final design report covering the above areas. The submission must also include a summary of the details of the recommended conceptual design solution for completeness. The drawings are expected to be produced using CAD software and must be in accordance with standard detailing practices.

In the detailed design report, the emphasis must be on accuracy, clarity and completeness. The final design report will be an individual. Students must also state any assumptions made and reference all sources of information used in the detailed design process.

You are required to correctly and appropriately reference all design codes, guidance notes, handbooks and publications used in detailed design phase within the report.
