COMPUTER NETWORKS AND DATA COMMUNICATIONS

Course Description

Computer Networks and Data Communication has been used for building local and wide area networks. It provides students with skills to build networks using network devices such as repeaters, bridges, switches,routers, and gateways and enable communication using network protocols. This course provides students with the opportunity to acquire skills to build and manage hardware and software component of Network.

Course Objectives

This course aims at:

(i) Providing a solid basis on the theoretical and practical understanding of data communication networks;

(ii) Introducing students to standards and guidelines in computer and data communication networks;

(iii) Impacting knowledge and skills relevant for the design, implementation and maintenance of modern computer communication networks.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students shall be able to:

a) Identify some contributors to networks and relate their achievements to the knowledge area;

b) Identify some components of a network;

c) Name some network devices and describe their purpose;

d) Describe advantages of a star topology over a ring topology;

e) Describe advantages of a ring topology over a star topology;

f) Describe how computer engineering uses or benefits from networks;

g) Explain Data Communications concepts.
