CO2702 Human Computer Interaction Assignment - University of Central Lancashire, UK

Learning Outcomes covered by this assignment:

1. Describe a range of interfaces, input and output modes and environments that may be found in a modern computer system.

2. Model users, systems and processes.

3. Design a suitable interface for any given class of users within any given application environment.

4. Find information about HCI topics from a variety of sources, including books, journals, and the World Wide Web.

Case Study -

VoiceThread is a cloud-based application for enhancing student engagement and online presence. Instructors and/or students can create, share, and comment on a variety of media (e.g., images, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, videos and audio files) using microphone, webcam, text, phone and audio-file upload. The company would like to scrap its existing Android application and start from scratch. For this reason, they would like to develop a new mobile application for the Android operating system. An area of interest is to offer new features that support active learning with university students completing activities in the field (e.g., their local community) using VoiceThread on their smartphones. To compete for the contract, you need to develop a demo that meets the following requirements:

Support the creation of group generated videos consisted of: (a) video clips captured by group members and (b) doodles supported by the application (characters, props, images and music).

Enable users to comment using microphone, text and video.

The instructor should be able to moderate individual contributions (video clips, doodles and comments) before they become available to the group.

Support at least one of the above features using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Be able to access VoiceThreads in a fully localised (location-specific), interactive and personalised manner.

Important Note: Your designs (including content) should be based on a specific scenario of use. You can choose any scenario you like (e.g. see AED example2) if it supports user collaboration and conversation in the field.

All parts to be completed individually.

Part 1 - (Design deliverables)

The design deliverables should include the following:

Two persona profiles of potential users and scenarios of use (one student and one instructor). Justify why you selected these as appropriate for the scenario (2 pages).

Two static wireframes with annotations. These include one wireframe for a student contributing content to a group-generated video and another wireframe for the instructor moderating individual contributions. The wireframe annotations should identify the reasoning for the design choice and the interaction method (2 pages).

You should use a range of relevant and high-quality references to support your work (use Harvard referencing).

Important note: Your design should adhere to HCI theory, guidelines and standards. However, I also expect your application to look and behave in a way that is consistent with the Android platform.

Part 2 - (Interactive Prototype)

Develop a high-fidelity prototype using a prototyping tool that does not require coding. Your prototype should fully implement your designs and specified interaction. It should also consider recent design trends for an aesthetically pleasing result. (min. 4 screens and max. 12 screens)

Important note: Do not create a separate prototype for instructors and students. The same prototype should enable access to both instructor and student screens (e.g., using relevant credentials).

A copy of your interactive prototype should be submitted on Blackboard.
