Principles of Structural Design
Assignment - Bending Moments and Shear Forces
Learning Outcome 1: Calculate bending moments and shear forces for simply supported steel and concrete beams.
Assignment Brief
Task 1
Produce shear force and bending moment diagrams for the following structures shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Hence or otherwise determine the shear force and bending moment values acting at point D in all cases.
Task 2
You are working as a Civil Engineering Technician for a large civil engineering consultancy and your line manager has asked you to produce a document to be distributed to the new employees producing a document to discuss the statutory requirements to ensure safety in structural designs. Refer to current legislation when explaining the statutory requirements.
Task 3
Using reliable sources of information (fully referenced), present substantial evidence and produce valid factors of safety for live loads, dead loads and imposed loads using current codes of practice and building regulations. [700 words minimum]
Task 4
You must produce a detailed presentation, including supporting example calculations for an appropriate design of your choice to evaluate how maximum bending moments determine steel beam selection using current codes of practice and approved documents in terms of economics and safety.
You must select non-biased and reliable sources of information when justifying your analysis. This distinction grade will only be awarded if the assessor is satisfied that you have reflected on reliable research material (fully referenced) to form the basis of your judgements.
