Learning Outcome 1. Critically assess a range of models and frameworks of coaching and mentoring;

Learning Outcome 2. Demonstrate and apply an informed and critical understanding of psychological theories and concepts informing the design and use of coaching and of mentoring;

Learning Outcome 3. Utilising a relevant model or framework, demonstrate the necessary skills to effectively provide coaching or mentoring support in an organisational, professional and/or personal context.

This assignment requires you to:

a. Keep a coaching/mentoring journal

Journal- Record your ongoing coaching and/or mentoring activities (informal and formal). Outline the professional context and underpinning rationale and describe events of significance to your outlook and practice.

The Journal provides the opportunity create and develop your approach to mentoring (your model) and is informed by experiential sources. The journal can be used as a ‘learning log' and will facilitate your critical engagement with the mentoring process in the evaluative paper. Record how your model of coaching/mentoring develops through interventions and reflecting on your approach. You may wish to identify the most influential values, people, experiences or situations. Look for factors that influence your thinking and practice such as habitual patterns of behaviour, values in action, behavioural drivers, communication style, conflict style, how you create rapport and/or what helps and hinders your effectiveness. We will expect at least 5 substantial journal entries in the appendix of your report. Sample journal formats will be provided in session 2 (w/c 27/01/20).

b) Write an evaluative paper

The aim of the Evaluative Paper is to help you consolidate the learning as a result of writing regular entries in your journal. The following questions may help you structure your reflections:

Part 1. What learning experiences do you believe are significant for you as a coach/mentor?

Part 2. What theory/research informs your coaching/mentoring approach?

Part 3. What impact does self-awareness have on your approach?

Part 4. What is effective coaching/mentoring practice?

Part 5. What coaching/mentoring strengths are apparent in your approach?

Part 6. What coaching/mentoring limitations are apparent in your approach?

Part 7. How might you continue reflective practice in your professional context?
