Part a. Briefly explain the significance of your chosen industry for the economy of the country you selected to study.
Part b. Analyse the political / economic influence, of your chosen industry in the country you have selected, with a particular focus on any evidence of it lobbying / exerting influence over aspects of labour law / minimum wage levels.
Part c. Describe and explain demographic profile of the labour force employed in your chosen industry in the country you have selected.
Part d. Identify and critically evaluate the extent to which economic growth associated with your chosen industry has influenced the distribution of wealth in your chosen country.
Tips on Issues for Group Research
In undertaking group research that will give each of you the starting point for writing a good individual essay, you should be thinking about answering the following questions:
• What is the political and economic history of your chosen country.
• How is it governed today and what is its economic standing? (By this, we mean, how is it ranked in terms of GDP, social issues and wealth per capita of the population).
• How much foreign direct investment does it attract and who are the main investors? (In looking at investors, you should develop a detailed picture of firms' country of origin, product markets and so on.)
• Where does the wealth go? For example, does the wealth generated by your chosen industry stay inside your selected country, or is it mainly realised / captured in a different part of the supply chain? You might like to take the example of minerals mining as an example to focus your thinking here. If a country has desirable natural resources, does it also possess the processing capability that adds most value to the finished product.
• Where does the labour supply come from (rural areas / other countries)?
• What are the characteristics of the labour force (for example, mainly female, male)?
• What are the general employment conditions for workers in the industry?
