Core Stability
Activity (Research and Writing):
a) Using the app Muscle Systems Pro III and the website "GetBodySmart", identify the actions of all the muscle groups identified in Fig. 1.
b) Based on your observations of Fig. 1 and findings of activity a), complete the table below and share your findings on the module forum.
c) Describe the muscular work/balance required to achieve correct posture.
d) Access reputable internet or alternative printed sources to explore how you can test the elasticity of the iliopsoas muscle complex and work out how it can be stretched effectively.
Activity (Research, Practical and Reflection):
a) Using the app Muscle Systems Pro III and the website www.GetBodySmart.com, identify the actions of the lower trapezius and latissimus dorsi (Fig. 4) and view the muscle animations available. Reflect on the importance of these muscles in relation to postural support, correct shoulder placement and controlled port de bras.
b) Access the video resources reverse 100s and shoulder strengthening, try out these exercises and work out how the imagery of visualising the two Vs on the back might support a dancer’s training.
c) How might you use the imagery such as the two Vs or the exercises you explored in task b) above to support your own training or teaching? Share your ideas on the forum.
Study Tasks
Well done, you have already completed a range of study tasks by engaging with the various activities within this unit.
1. Reading and Research
a) Read the IADMS article and identify at least one other article which discusses core stability and postural support for dancers. Read these articles and note:
What does the research describe as the ‘core’ and what are the key elements of an ideal posture for dance?
What are the common issues associated with poor posture, how do you identify them and why might they occur?
What are the potential outcomes/consequences of weak postural muscles in dancers?
b) Read Haas (51-71) and use reputable online sources or books on core strengthening (you should be able to access such sources from your local library) to identify further core strengthening exercises. In each case, identify which muscle/s are trained and how the selected exercise is of benefit to a dancer.
2. Writing
a) Select one exercise you explored as part of the activities provided in this unit and one you have found during your research for task 1.
b). For each exercise explain how it trains the core muscles and explore how it could be developed over a period of time using the concept of progressive overload.
3. Reflection
a) From your own experience as a dancer and a dance teacher, reflect on the ‘tools’ which you have used or you have been taught to use in order to develop good core stability. Think about:
What techniques have been useful, and which ones have not been so helpful, and why? Share your thoughts on the forum.
Are there any visual aids/tools/techniques which you would like to research further or create resources to help support you in your own training or teaching?
