Surveying Practice

You are required to carry out and produce an engineering survey of the London College building and surrounding car parks and roads, together with associated calculations using linear surveying, levelling techniques and angular measurements.

This is an individual coursework carried out as a group field work in which you are expected to plan, carry out your work, and complete your survey. All group members must participate in various aspects of this practical project. Each group member is required to:

Having sketches for the surveying area.

Their own data sheet for all the data collected within the surveying.

A course work report containing all tasks; a report of 1500 word long.

The report must include all the surveying procedures and calculations.

The collected data must be submitted with the course work report.

TASK: Topographical survey

Carry out a reconnaissance for the college building and produce a sketch (supplemented by photographs if necessary) for the site showing the important permanent features including boundaries, services nearby. control points, etc. Copies of the sketch may be used to reference your measured points by labelling and numbering on the sketch in further surveys.

1. Choose suitable control points for a polygon traverse stations, they must be located that are visible and easily accessed. Avoid selecting positions that result in small angles (less than 20 degrees) and very short distances or the obstruction to make measurements.

2. Using a total station measure the angles (face left and face right) starting from the first control point in which in addition to the interior angle, sighting to the arbitrary North is also must be done.

3. Measure the distances of the lines using an EDM function of the total station to the left and right of the control station.

4. At each control station using radial positioning technique measure the angle and the distance for different features such as building corners, trees, pole etc. as for traverse stations.

5. All measurements should be recorded in appropriate survey sheets using standard methods.

6. Do calculations for angle means, check for the traverse angle measurements and allowable angle misclosure, then distribute the error evenly and make adjustment to the polygon angles.

7. Do calculations for coordinates' determination, use Bowditch method for adjustments to the coordinates of the traverse.

8. Within the office work produce a fully annotated large scale (choose a suitable scale. 1:200 to 1:500) drawing on A4/ A3 of the traverse and topographical survey points with all measured details. A CAD drawing is also acceptable.
