Managing an engineering project focusing on Sustainable Engineering
Learning Outcomes
LO1 Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering problem.
LO2 Conduct planned project activities to generate outcomes which provide a solution to the identified engineering problem
LO3 Produce a project report analysing the outcomes of each of the project processes and stages
LO4 Present the project report drawing conclusions on the outcomes of the project
Assignment Brief and Guidance
Scenario:
Theme: The professional Engineer's Role in sustainable Engineering
One of the major energy providers is planning to diversify the production of renewable energy resources. You are employed as a professional engineer to play a significant role in sustainability and to examine the broad ranging aspects of sustainability from the standpoint of a Professional Engineer. Furthermore, you will be able to analyse engineering functions and their impact on the environment, whilst combining the principles of sustainable design with the responsibilities placed upon Professional Engineers.
You will need to select a project based on the theme described above. The project title should be approved by your tutor. The type of project chosen for the selected topic should allow for the depth and breadth of study suitable for a level 4 qualification
Based on your selected project, you are required to carry the following tasks:
LO1 Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering problem.
Task 1 Select an appropriate engineering based project, giving reasons for the selection.
Task 2 Create a project plan for the engineering project
Task 3 Undertake a feasibility study to justify project selection.
Task 4 Illustrate the effect of legislation and ethics on the decision making process in developing the project plan.
LO2 Conduct planned project activities to generate outcomes which provide a solution to the identified engineering problem
Task 5 Conduct project activities, recording progress against original project plan.
Task 6 Explore alternative methods to monitor and meet project milestones, justify selection of chosen method(s).
Task 7 Critically evaluate the success of the project plan making recommendations for improvements
LO3 Produce a project report analysing the outcomes of each of the project processes and stages
Task 8 Produce a project report covering each stage of the project and analysing project outcomes
Task 9 Use appropriate critical analysis and evaluation techniques to analyse project findings.
LO4 Present the project report drawing conclusions on the outcomes of the project
Task 10 Present the project report using appropriate media to an audience
Task 11 Analyse own behaviours and performance during the project and suggest areas for improvement
Task 12 Critically analyse the project outcomes making recommendations for further development
Your final report should be between 20-40 pages (A4) minimum of 5000 words. You may use an Appendix for any additional information, which is not directly related to the body of your report.
